About the Books
The Reading with Miss Amanda books allow children to follow their curiosity across 5 reading levels, from the pre-reader to advanced reader stage. There are five books in each level that reinforce learning objectives so that when a child progresses to the next level, they have mastered the skills from the previous level. The series teaches reading phonetically over the course of 32 books, each of which is about 75 pages. The curriculum is masterfully adapted from classroom materials designed by Miss Amanda for Big City Montessori School.
Lowercase Letters
The Yellow Level teaches children to remember phonemes — basic sounds that are the building blocks of the English language. Each book offers two consonants and one vowel. Over five books, this is a total of fifteen letter sounds. The books can be combined with sandpaper letters, used as a lesson extension, or read as a story to a small group or an entire class.
The Movable Alphabet
The Orange Level offers the roadmap of the Movable Alphabet, providing lessons to bridge from reading single-letter sounds to building and reading three-letter words. Each of the five books focuses on understanding one vowel, in the order a, e, i, o, u. The books can also be used by a student as a self-teaching tool, offering the teacher the freedom to help other children and then return to read the words the student has built.
Three Letter Words
The Pink Level teaches children to build three-letter words. Each of the five books isolates the task of understanding words with one vowel, in the order a, e, i, o, u, and offers the following lessons: matching words to pictures, flash cards, a list of three-letter words, short sentences, and a short story.
Four and Five Letter Words
The Blue Level focuses on four and five-letter words. Each of the five books isolates the task of understanding these words with one vowel, in the order a, e, i, o, u, and offers the following lessons: matching words to pictures, flash cards, a list of four- and five-letter words, short sentences, and a short story.
Phonograms & Complex Vowel Sounds (diphthongs/digraphs)
The Green Level offers advanced vocabulary, additional English language rules and further lessons on breaking down written words. Each of the twelve books offers: flash cards, a list of words, short sentences and a short story.
