What is the Montessori Method?

The Montessori method is based on Maria Montessori’s approach which emphasizes experiential learning in order to foster independence, cultivate confidence, learn self-regulation and instill a lifelong love of learning. A Montessori environment allows individual students to follow their curiosity and learn at their own pace. Guided by a teacher, children take the time they need to fully understand a concept and meet specialized learning goals.

Montessori reading curriculum has three essential components: A strong foundation in phonics, comprehension based on visualization and whole language, and learning to read for meaning using context clues. This approach is unique in that children first learn how words are constructed — letter sounds and phonemes. Once they are aware that words can be broken down into smaller sounds, children can then independently learn to read and understand new words.
